Tourist In Your Own Town #16: National Museum of the American Indian / U.S. Custom House
This month we visit the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian located within the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House in Lower Manhattan, across from Bowling Green. The Custom House was one of the earliest designations of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, is on the National Register of Historic Places and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976.

The museum holds one of the most extensive collections of Native American arts and artifacts in the world and regularly presents contemporary Native American artists with a variety of programs.
The museum is free and open daily.
*U.S. Custom House*
This 1907 Beaux Arts masterpiece was designed by the great Cass Gilbert and features a three story oval rotunda decorated with murals from New York artist Reginald Marsh.
Public Tours are given to offer an in-depth look at the unique architecture, including a visit to the Collectors Office that features woodwork by Tiffany Studios.
