A Conservancy ad on the CBS Jumbotron in Times Square with the message: Preservation Keeps New York, “New York.” The pro-landmark promo ran once an hour From Late July to September 2012.
At a time when some are questioning the value of landmarking, we want to say in a big and bold way that the City’s landmarks make New York a one-of-a-kind experience. We have the richest collection of architectural wonders in the country—the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge, Greenwich Village, and Central Park—to name just a few.
Landmarking protects everything from 17th century Dutch homes to distinctive historic districts to groundbreaking Modernist office towers.
Visitors from around the country and around the world come to see New York—not a generic metropolis. Landmarks ensure that they can.
There has been much new growth in the City in many areas. And there’s room for more. But the iconic landmark buildings and neighborhoods create our identity. They provide homes, cultural and religious institutions, for generations of New Yorkers. They also attract millions of tourists, providing much welcome economic stimulus and local jobs.
