Bricks and Brownstone

Your support is critical for the new edition of Bricks and Brownstone, the classic history of the New York row house.

The New York Times has called Bricks and Brownstone a “Bible” for preservationists, one which both “chronicled and furthered the row-house revival that transformed many New York neighborhoods.”

In the forty years since the publication of Bricks and Brownstone, numerous row house neighborhoods across New York have been designated as historic districts. Yet many important row house neighborhoods remain unprotected by landmark designation, and even within historic districts, all brownstone interiors remain vulnerable, since landmarks designation protects only building exteriors.

The revised and expanded book will serve as a renewed clarion call for the preservation of the New York City brownstone, the backbone of New York’s historic housing stock.
