- First Unitarian Church before restoration workThis summer marks a return of the Historic Properties Fund to the Brooklyn Heights Historic District for the first time in over a decade. There are three restoration projects underway made possible with Fund loans.
At 39 Remsen Street, the Fund provided a loan to restore the brick and brownstone façade, repair the woodwork and restore the distinctive brownstone portico and its ironwork. 39 Remsen Street was called The Alden when it was built in the 1880s, and is one of Brooklyn’s earliest apartment buildings. NV/da is the project architect and the contractor is Burda Construction.
The Fund is financing the replacement of the distinctive metal cornice at 62 Pierrepont Street, a Beaux Arts apartment building designed by George Fred Pelham constructed in 1911. Caroline Schweyer Architect is the project architect and Titan Restoration is the contractor.
Also on Pierrepont Street, a Fund loan is being used to replace the sanctuary roof at First Unitarian Church. The Gothic Revival style church was designed by Minard Lafever and built in 1844 at the corner of Pierrepont Street and Monroe Place. The project architect is Vince Benic Architect and the contractor is Landmark Slate and Copper Works. Interestingly, the last Fund project in Brooklyn Heights was in 1995 at First Unitarian Church.
