The Sacred Sites Committee recently met and pledged 18 grants to religious properties throughout New York State. These grants included 14 Sacred Sites Grants, totaling $65,000, and four Robert W. Wilson-Sacred Sites Challenge Grants, totaling $160,000. We saw a decline in applications for larger challenge grants this summer, as some congregations are reluctant to initiate major capital projects in the current climate of economic uncertainty. The number of applicants for regular Sacred Sites grants of up to $10,000, for projects averaging about $20,000 remained steady – so congregations continue to maintain their buildings, while deferring larger capital projects. Applications for Sacred Sites grants for conditions assessments, construction documents, and construction management services remained strong, with 5 of 14 Sacred sites grants awarded this fall for upstate preservation project planning (New York City consulting grants are funded and awarded separately).

Seven intrepid congregations awarded grants for large capital projects in the most recent grant cycle included:

Church of The Intercession, a 1912-1915 Bertram Goodhue masterwork in Upper Manhattan, was awarded a $60,000 Sacred Sites – Robert W. Wilson challenge grant towards a $500,000 tower, bell structure, and bay window restoration project.

Bedford Park Congregational Church, a picturesque, 1889 Queen Anne style church in the Bronx, was awarded a $25,000 Sacred Sites – Robert W. Wilson challenge grant towards a $190,000 roof replacement project.

St. Matthias Roman Catholic Church, a handsome 1924-1926 neo-Renaissance cathedral in the newly designated NYC historic district of Ridgewood South in Queens, was awarded a $50,000 Sacred Sites – Robert W. Wilson challenge grant towards a $533,000 restoration of its copper standing seam roof, gutters, and trim.

United Methodist Church of Patchogue, an 1890 Romanesque Revival church in Suffolk County, was awarded a $25,000 Sacred Sites – Robert W. Wilson challenge grant towards a $50,000 bell tower roofing and masonry restoration project.

St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church in the NYC Jackson Heights Historic District was awarded a $9,000 grant towards the $325,000 restoration of brick masonry facades and slate mansard at the neo-Gothic rectory, designed by Brooklyn architects Murphy and Lehman and constructed in 1926.

First Church of Christ Scientist, Katonah, an 1895 Queen Anne former mansion, adapted by the Katonah Christian Science congregation in 1952, was awarded a $6,000 Sacred Sites grant towards a $118,000 new slate roof, and a $2,500 Sacred Sites grant for roofing consultant services.

Reformed Dutch Church of Rhinebeck Flatts, a highly intact, 1808 Federal church in the center of Rhinebeck, was awarded a $5,000 Sacred Sites grant towards the $78,000 reconstruction of concrete ramp and entrance porch, and associated site drainage and church foundation repairs, and a $1,500 Sacred Sites grant for architectural services to guide the project.
