Before

218 Gates Avenue in South Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, was built for lace merchant John Gibb in the 1850s. A grant of $60,000 to the Pratt Area Community Council (PACC) helped to retain the elaborate slate mansard and dormered roof and replace decorative cast-iron cresting. In 2003, PACC restored the mansion so that it could provide dining, offices, and community space for the residents of a new, connected 71-unit building for people with HIV/AIDS.
