502 Canal St., Manhattan

Numbers 502-508 Canal Street is one of the most remarkable surviving ensembles of Federal Era buildings in the city, dating from about 1827, including the earliest remaining shopfront at Number 506. They are all designated landmarks.

Numbers 502-506, however, in common ownership, are sorely neglected and vacant, with inadequately sealed windows open to the elements.

Number 508, with a different owner, is in good condition.

The City Council recently passed legislation that will permit the City to more expeditiously prosecute owners of landmarks like 502-506 Greenwich for ‘Failure to Maintain’ their buildings in good repair.
