Lucy G. Moses Preservation Awards for 2005
On Monday, May 8, 2006, the Conservancy presented its fifteenth annual Lucy G. Moses Preservation Awards to an impressive array of honorees.
Some 400 guests enjoyed the ceremony and reception, held at the landmark St. Bartholomew’s Church.
Building owners and professionals were on hand to receive their “Lucy’s.” In their acceptance speeches, honorees shared not only their gratitude for the Conservancy’s support but also their concerns for our City’s historic buildings and districts.
Preservation Leadership Award winner Everett Ortner, for example, shared fears over the demise of New York-based corporations caring for historic buildings.
Without this support, he said, the unique character of our neighborhoods and buildings is fading.
“Writer Gertrude Stein once said of the city in which she grew up, Oakland, California, that ‘there is no there there’,” he shared. “Are we New Yorkers now approaching the point where we will say of our city: ‘there is no here here’?” To receive a copy of his complete speech, please email us.
We applaud the extraordinary passion, ongoing professionalism, and outstanding projects of all of our winners.
