The Hills at Governors Island

June 8, 2016

Conservancy members were given a sneak peek of the hills on Governors Island, set to open to the public July 19, 2016. This phase of redevelopment is focused on the construction of four hills on Governors Island’s southern end.

The four sloping hills totaling 10 acres each have a specific purpose. Some are meant for active use while others are intended to show off Governors Island’s unique vantage point. The tallest of the four, Outlook Hill, rises 70 feet over the Island and has views of the Statue of Liberty, New York Harbor, and the Manhattan skyline.

Thank you to our intrepid tour guide, Claire Kelly who braved the pop-up rain shower to show us around and to the Trust for Governors Island.

Throughout the year, Circle tours go behind-the-scenes of some of New York’s most interesting historic properties. Some tours require hard hats to visit projects during restoration, while others showcase completed restorations of commercial buildings, residences, museums, churches, and synagogues. On occasion, conservators, engineers, and craftspeople open their studios to our Circle members.
