The New York Landmarks Conservancy honored Michael P. Frankfurt and Norbert W. Sander, Jr., M.D., with the 2005 Chairman’s Award. As Chairman and President/CEO of the Armory Foundation, they have overseen the transformation of a dismal and malfunctioning homeless shelter into a full-service community center, a national landmark, and the pride of its community.
The 168th Street Armory now houses the National Track and Field Hall of Fame, the New Balance Track & Field Center, the Charles B. Rangel Technology & Learning Center, and the New Heights Neighborhood Center. Its programs includ the Police Athletic League, Growth Development Services for teenagers, the Armory College Prep Program, and the Armory Elementary School Enrichment Program.
