Conservancy Helps Repair Bartow-Pell Mansion with 15K Emergency Grant
The Conservancy approved a $15,000 emergency grant to help repair a structural issue at the exquisite Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum in the Pelham Bay section of the Bronx. Specifically, floor beams were damaged and weakened by a steam pipe break last winter, which caused a portion of the floor in one of the first story rooms to sag dangerously.
The grant will assist the Historic House Trust in replacing five decayed floor beams as well as a portion of the sill plate. The repair will be done in such a way as to not compromise the structural integrity of the wall assembly.
The neo-classical style stone house was built in 1836 as the country seat of Robert Bartow, who was descended from the Pell family. The interiors are exceptionally fine Greek revival style designed in the manner of Minard Lafever.
The Conservancy is a strong supporter of the Historic House Trust and has given similar grants in years past for work on other houses throughout the Boros.
